Overview
The Ngorongoro Crater is a stunning geological feature and one of the most famous wildlife conservation areas in the world. It’s located in the northern part of Tanzania, within the Ngorongoro Conservation Area (NCA), which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Crater Structure: The Ngorongoro Crater is the world’s largest intact volcanic caldera. It was formed around 2-3 million years ago when a massive volcano erupted and then collapsed in on itself, creating a bowl-shaped depression that’s about 16 to 19 kilometres (10 to 12 miles) in diameter. The caldera floor lies about 600 meters (1,970 feet) below the rim.
Elevation: The crater floor is approximately 1,800 meters (5,900 feet) above sea level, while the rim reaches about 2,300 meters (7,500 feet) in altitude.
Ecology and Wildlife
- The Ngorongoro Crater is home to a diverse range of ecosystems, including grasslands, forests, wetlands, and even some swamps. The variety of habitats allows for a large concentration of wildlife in a relatively small area.
- Big Five: It’s one of the best places in Africa to see the “Big Five”—lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhinoceros. In fact, it’s one of the few places in Tanzania where you can see the endangered black rhino in the wild.
