Mount Meru Climbing & Trekking Tours
Tanzania’s Hidden Hiking Gem
Few Crowds. Untamed Beauty. An Adventure for True Nature Lovers.
Climbing Mount Meru in Tanzania is a journey into one of Africa’s most underrated trekking experiences. Often overlooked in favor of the famous Mount Kilimanjaro, Mount Meru offers a quieter, more intimate adventure, rich in wildlife, breathtaking scenery, and rewarding challenges.
At 4,566 meters, Meru is Tanzania’s second-highest mountain and Africa’s fifth-highest peak. This dormant stratovolcano rises dramatically within Arusha National Park, providing a diverse trekking route through lush rainforests, alpine deserts, and along a spectacular crater rim.
Unlike crowded trekking routes elsewhere, Meru’s trails are peaceful, making it perfect for hikers seeking solitude, authentic wildlife encounters, and stunning summit views—especially of nearby Mount Kilimanjaro at sunrise.
Why Choose Mount Meru?
- Abundant Wildlife – Spot giraffes, buffalo, baboons, colobus monkeys, and antelope on the first day alone.
- Shorter Trek – Complete the climb in just four days, leaving time for a Tanzania safari or a Zanzibar beach holiday.
- Fewer Crowds – Enjoy a tranquil, less commercialized trekking experience.
- Varied Landscapes – From montane forests and heathland to alpine desert and volcanic craters.
The Trekking Experience
Route – The Momella Route
The Momella Route is the only official trail to Mount Meru’s summit. It begins at Momella Gate in Arusha National Park and takes you through:
- Rainforest Zone – Dense jungle alive with wildlife and waterfalls like Malo Falls.
- Heath & Moorland – Expansive views, giant lobelias, and rolling hills.
- Alpine Desert – Stark volcanic terrain leading to the crater rim.
- Summit Push – From Rhino Point to Socialist Peak, with sweeping views of the Ash Cone and Kilimanjaro.
